Hazard out of Europa League game with ankle knock

Chelsea forward Eden Hazard will miss Thursday’s UEFA Europa League game against Greek side PAOK Salonika due to a minor ankle injury, club manager Maurizio Sarri said on Wednesday. Hazard The Italian however added that Hazard should recover in time to face Fulham in the English Premier League on Sunday. Hazard played the full 90 minutes of Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday and was limping towards the end. But Sarri has now allayed fears that the Belgium international was facing a long spell out injured. “Hazard, of course, it is not a serious injury,” the Italian told a news conference. “He will not be able to play tomorrow (Thursday) but I think he will be able to recover for the English Premier League match.” Hazard has been used sparingly in Europe this season, with Sarri choosing to keep his top goalscorer fresh for the English Premier League. But the manager said he was worried that the Belgian was still being overworked. “I am worried because he ha

Manchester United mulls De Gea contract extension

Manchester United have triggered the one-year extension on star goalkeeper David De Gea’s contract, British media reported Thursday. The Spain stopper’s deal was set to expire at the end of the current season and, without activating the extension clause, he could have entered into pre-contract talks with another club after the latest transfer window opens on January 1. De Gea has long been linked with a number of top European clubs but it now appears he will be staying put at Old Trafford until at least the end of the 2019/20 season. The 28-year-old joined United from La Liga side Atletico Madrid in a deal worth a reported £18.9 million ($24.1 million) in June 2011. He took over from Edwin van der Sar and helped United win the last of the 13 Premier League titles they secured under former manager Alex Ferguson in the 2012/13 campaign. Such has been De Gea’s impact upon the English game, he has been named in the Professional Footballers’ Association Team of the Year for each of t

Neymar inspires PSG to leave Liverpool in danger in Champions Leaguey

(Photo by FRANCK FIFE / AFP) Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hit out at the referee and Neymar as his side slumped to a 2-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday that leaves last season’s runners-up dangerously close to an early Champions League exit. Juan Bernat and Neymar scored to put PSG in control in the first half in the French capital, before a James Milner penalty on the stroke of half-time ensured this pivotal game remained in the balance until the death. PSG knew a defeat here coupled with an unfavourable result in the night’s other Group C game could see the ambitious Qatar-owned club eliminated already. But instead it is Liverpool — beaten in each of their last five games away from Anfield in the Champions League — wh

Sigurdsson says in-form Everton are confident of good show at Anfield

Everton’s ability to grind out results has boosted their confidence ahead of Sunday’s Merseyside derby against Liverpool in the English Premier League, midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson said on Thursday. Sigurdsson Iceland international Sigurdsson scored the winning goal as Everton overcame promoted Cardiff City 1-0 last Saturday. The victory helped them to extend their unbeaten league run to three games and climb to sixth in the table on 22 points. “I think all the boys have been looking forward to the derby since the start of the season and that feeling has grown with the performances we have been putting together over the past couple of months,” Sigurdsson told the club’s website. “The team is playing really well and getting results and we are grinding out wins when we’re not playing our best football.” Victory over Cardiff followed a determined display at Stamford Bridge, where Everton held title contenders Chelsea to a goalless draw earlier this month. “We can take confidence f

Champions League: Liverpool make history in 2-1 loss to PSG

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool on Wednesday night made history in their 2-1 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League fixture played at the Parc des Princes Stadium in France. Juan Bernat and Neymar scored for the hosts, before James Milner pulled one back from the spot for the Reds ahead of the half time. According to Metro UK, Liverpool’s defeat to the French Ligue 1 champions means it is the first time in the club’s history they would lose all three of their Champions League away games in the group stages. Liverpool now need to beat Napoli at Anfield next month, to progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League. Klopp’s men are third placed on the Group C table with 6 points from five games, while PSG are second placed with 8 points from the same number of games. Liverpool will now tackle Arsenal this weekend at the Emirates in the Premier League fixture.

PREMIER LEAGUE! Man United Set To Trigger De Gea’s One-Year Extension

Manchester United are set to trigger the one-year option on goalkeeper David de Gea’s contract to avoid any uncertainty over his future heading into the January transfer window. Spain international De Gea, 28, joined United from Atletico Madrid in 2011. His contract ends in the summer, which would allow him to talk to overseas clubs from 1 January and potentially sign a pre-contract agreement. However, United have an option to extend the deal for another year. De Gea’s representatives are already working on the basis that his contract will expire in 2020. As manager Jose Mourinho confirmed after Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Young Boys, United are keen to hold on to the keeper, who has won United’s player of the year award four times in the past five seasons. It is understood De Gea is open to the idea of remaining at the club, although as yet, there has been no agreement on terms, with De Gea’s camp mindful of the enormous salary United agreed to pay Alexis Sanchez when he joined fro

Europa League: Arsenal’s squad for Vorskla clash revealed

Arsenal manager, Unai Emery, has named a host of academy players in his squad to face Vorskla Poltava in the Europa League on Thursday. First-team players such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mesut Ozil and Lucas Torreira have not travelled to Ukraine. Instead, the more unfamiliar names of Charlie Gilmour, Zech Medley and Dejan Iliev have taken their place. Senior players such as Petr Cech and Aaron Ramsey have made the trip, but nine outfield members of Freddie Ljungberg’s Under-23s have also travelled to Ukraine. Charlie Gilmour, Eddie Nketiah, Tyreece John-Jules, Zech Medley, Emile Smith-Rowe, Joe Willock, Jordi Osei-Tutu, Bukayo Saka and Dominic Thompson were all on the plane which left from Luton airport heading for Kiev on Wednesday afternoon. The game has been moved by Uefa from Poltava to Kiev because of security concerns in Ukraine. Arsenal, who have already qualified for the last 32, will clinch top spot in Group E with a victory. PSG optimistic over fitness of Mbappe, Neymar for Liverpool showdown

(Photo by FRANCK FIFE / AFP) It has been a month marred by off-field controversies for Paris Saint-Germain, but it is the fitness of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar that casts the longest shadow over the French club ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League crunch clash against Liverpool. PSG go into the game at the Parc des Princes in third place in Group C, and a defeat against last season’s runners-up, coupled with a win for Napoli at home to Red Star Belgrade, would condemn the Qatar-owned side to an early elimination. Such a prospect is unthinkable for a club with the ambitions of PSG, who are desperate to improve on consecutive exits from the Champions League in the last 16. Thomas Tuchel has won every domestic game since his

What France Coach Did After Kante Showed Up Late For International Duty

N’golo Kante turned up late for France training during the international break but avoided being punished by manager Didier Deschamps. The Chelsea midfielder was held up due to an issue with his train, which was 42 minutes late. He was unable to join-up with his teammates at Les Bleus’ Clairefontaine training base at the assigned time due to the delay. But his status as among the nicest and most humble players in professional football helped him swerve what might have been a stern punishment from his superiors. Upon eventually showing up nearly three-quarters-of-an-hour after his scheduled arrival time, Kante attempted to explain himself to Deschamps and his coaching team with a cheeky grin spread across his face. But instead of reading the riot act, the coach merely joked: “But N’Golo, you are faster than the train.” Upon moving to Stamford Bridge, Kante had to be urged into buying a car to travel to training having initially stated his desire to run to the club’s Cobham traini

“I Learned The Most In My Career From Frank Lampard” – Didier Drogba

Didier Drogba has singled out his former Chelsea teammate Frank Lampard out as one of the biggest influences on his career. Didier Drogba played with Frank Lampard for eight years at Stamford Bridge, which culminated in Champions League triumph in 2012. The two set each other up on 36 occasions in the Premier League, still the highest combined figure for goals and assists between two players in the English top flight. Speaking at a Yokohama fan event in Tokyo, the Ivorian was full of praise for his former teammate. “There’s one [player] that I’m going to put a bit more in front because most of my goals came from him, it’s Frank Lampard,” Drogba said. “And also because every day after training we were staying on the pitch trying to practice, trying to create some exercises because the ones we did a few days ago were becoming too easy. “So, we were trying to bring in new exercises and that’s how we progressed and challenged each other to score goals, to create assists and for me

Cornet struck again with nine minutes to play as Lyon looked on course to inflict their second defeat on City this season, but Aguero promptly glanced home at a corner to give the visitors the point they needed to reach the last 16. Thiago Silva mocks PSG team-mate Neymar's luxury shoes

Neymar made another strong fashion statement this week when he wore a pair of £675 shoes to PSG training. The luxury Dolce & Gabbana trainers were mainly white and red but featured yellow laces which matched the Brazil captain's equally-loud tracksuit. Fellow Brazilian Thiago Silva seemed to mock Neymar as the PSG defender posted a video to Instagram showing the 26-year-old parading his striking sneakers. In the video, Silva, 34, can be heard laughing from behind the camera. Silva captioned the video using three rocket emojis, perhaps suggesting that the trainers would be better suited to a trip to space, rather than a day at work. Neymar trained on Tuesday as he handed PSG a boost ahead of this week's Champions League clash with Liverpool. He had picked up a groin injury while on international duty last week and missed PSG's 1-0 victory over Toulouse in Ligue 1 on Saturday. Neymar was forced off after just eight minutes of Brazil's 1-0 victory over Cameroo

Didier Drogba Open To Management Role Following Retirement

The 40-year-old called time on a 20-year playing profession on Wednesday having won four Premier League titles, the Champions League, four FA Cups and three League Cups with Chelsea. Topped multiple times by the Ivory Coast, Drogba eminently played under Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti more than two trophy-loaded spells at Stamford Bridge. In a selective meeting with Tubes from Soccer AM, he uncovered he is available to turning his hand to the executives. “I’ve met enough directors to make it conceivable. “I’ve worked with a great deal of supervisors – distinctive aptitudes, diverse methodologies – and I’ve played with a ton of good players who comprehend the amusement,” he said.

Mourinho Tells United To Treat Young Boys Clash As ‘Last Chance’

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho wants his side to take the game to Young Boys straight from kick-off when they face the Swiss club in a Champions League tie at Old Trafford on Tuesday. Victory for Mourinho’s men, allied to a Valencia failure to beat Juventus, would see United qualify for the last 16 of European club football’s elite competition with a game to spare. Mourinho slammed United after their lacklustre goalless draw with Premier League strugglers Crystal Palace last weekend, accusing his players of lacking “heart” after they were booed off the field by their own fans at Old Trafford following a result that left them seventh in the table – well adrift of the qualifying positions for next season’s Champions League. He warned then that a repeat display against Youngs Boys would leave United needing to go Spain and beat Valencia in their final Group H game if they were to remain involved in the competition. United’s sluggish start has been attributed to Mourinho’s o

EPL: Real reason Unai Emery dropped Ozil against Crystal Palace revealed

Arsenal manager, Unai Emery, dropped Mesut Ozil from his starting XI against Bournemouth, after being disappointed by his contribution in last month’s draw against Crystal Palace. Ozil has started 10 Premier League fixtures this season, but was named on the bench in Sunday’s victory over the Cherries. Emery used all three substitutions at Dean Court, but left the 30-year-old on the bench. After the match, the Spaniard played down Ozil’s absence, saying: “Every player is important. We thought about how we can be better in the match today, with a very demanding match physically with their intensity against us and we came to that decision.” But, according to the Daily Mirror, Emery made his decision after being left disappointed by Ozil’s contribution in the 2-2 draw at Selhurst Park last month. It is claimed Ozil now faces the prospect of spending more time on the bench under Emery, a manager who demands a high work-rate of every one of his players.

Bournemouth 1 Arsenal 2: `Aubameyang Wins It For Arsenal To Pull Level With Sergio Aguero

Pierre Emerick Aubameyang inspired Arsenal to a hard fought victory over Bournemouth during their domestic league clash today to take their unbeaten streak to 17 across all competitions. The Gabonese International’s goal today takes his tally to 20 for the Gunners in just 31 appearance for the London side and has also drawn level with Sergio Aguero as this season’s premier league top scorer with 8 goals. With the scores leveled at 1-1 at half time, Aubameyang , was fed with an incisive pass from Sead Kolasinic and the Gabonese star was left with the simple task of tapping in from close range to change the scoreline to 2-1.

EPL: Shearer names 3 Tottenham players that destroyed Chelsea, blames one Blues star

Newcastle United legend, Alan Shearer has named three Tottenham players that destroyed Chelsea in their Premier League clash on Saturday. Shearer also blamed Chelsea centre-back, David Luiz for Harry Kane’s goal. The Blues lost their unbeaten run to Tottenham on Saturday as they went down in a 3-1 defeat. But it was Kane’s long-range effort that angered Chelsea supporters the most. Luiz surprisingly moved out the way of Kane’s speculative shot instead of blocking it. The incident was highlighted on Match of the Day on Saturday night and Shearer said he couldn’t believe it. “David Luiz got out the way of the ball, I thought centre-backs were supposed to stop it,” he said while footage was shown of the error. Shearer also praised three Tottenham forwards. He added, “They dominated Chelsea for 90 minutes and ruthlessly exposed that back four. “They battered them and it should have been six or seven with the chances they missed. “Kane, Dele Alli and Son ran them ragged, exposed

EPL: De Gea to become highest-paid goalkeeper with PSG move

David De Gea is set to become the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world, by joining Paris St-Germain in the summer, when his contract runs out at Manchester United. The 28-year-old has been stalling on signing a new deal at Old Trafford, knowing that he could earn up to £300,000-a-week at PSG. De Gea could be set to earn around £15.5m a year in wages with the French giants, taking his potential salary to over £60m if he were to sign a four-year deal in Paris. The Spain international is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and has won the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League since he signed for United in 2011. A dream move to Real Madrid fell through on transfer deadline day in 2015 and that prospect ended when Thibaut Courtois joined the Champions League holders from Chelsea last summer.

Solari says Real Madrid can fix mistakes after Eibar humbling

Real Madrid coach Santiago Solari says his team can fix their problems after a 3-0 humiliation at Eibar on Saturday in La Liga. The Argentine won four matches as interim coach but suffered a painful defeat at Ipurua in his first game since taking charge permanently this month. Gonzalo Escalante, Sergi Enrich and Kike Garcia piled misery on Real Madrid, who are sixth, in an anaemic display in the Basque country. “It’s a tough result that we didn’t expect and we have to work to improve and adjust certain things that we didn’t do well. But they are remedial,” Solari told a news conference. “We were not good and that’s on us. We have to work to correct the mistakes. They were good, it went for them and we have to congratulate Eibar.” The European champions’ defense was fragile and if it had not been for a string of good saves by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois the thrashing could have been more severe for them. “We will try to let in fewer goals and score more. That’s our job and we ha

Manchester City maintained their top position, with a 4-0 drubbing of West Ham, while Liverpool kept pace with a 3-0 victory at Watford.

Jose Mourinho has declared that Manchester United will be back in the Premier League’s top four by the end of 2018. United host Crystal Palace on Saturday sitting in eighth place, seven points off Champions League places. Although Mourinho acknowledges that is a “big gap,” he remains confident of climbing the table by January. “I know it’s a big gap but I also know that until the end of December, if I’m not wrong, we have eight Premier League matches to play. “Eight Premier League matches — we are speaking about 24 points, 24 points for us to fight for the other ones in the top four to fight for too, but I believe we are going to be there,” he told a news conference on Friday. Mourinho will have Anthony Martial and Marouane Fellaini available, after they missed international duty with France and Belgium respectively.

Guardiola rules out January signings despite Mendy injury

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City will not be making any signings in January, effectively ruling out buying a short-term replacement for the injured Benjamin Mendy. Guardiola believes his squad is strong enough to get through to the end of the season, despite the injury absences of Mendy, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and back-up goalkeeper Claudio Bravo. Belgian playmaker De Bruyne and Portuguese midfielder Silva are likely to be available for the Premier League leaders within the next 10 days but Mendy will be out for up to 12 weeks after having surgery on meniscus damage in his left knee. Asked whether he might be tempted to sign a replacement for Mendy in January, Guardiola said: “No. We are not going to spend anything (in January). I am so happy with the squad, people are coming back, so no.” Guardiola’s comments also signal that any move for Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong will wait until the end of the season. De Jong, who has been heavily linked with a move to the Eti

EPL: Mourinho speaks on Alexis Sanchez, Bailly leaving Manchester United

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, feels Alexis Sanchez does not want to leave the club in January. Sanchez has struggled to find his best form since joining United from Arsenal last January. The Chileans has started just five of United’s 12 Premier League matches this season, scoring once and was dropped for the Manchester Derby. Mourinho admits Sanchez is underperforming, but feels he still has the desire to turn his United career around. When asked if he expected Sanchez to leave, Mourinho replied: “I don’t think so because he has never told me that he wants to leave. He never told me that he’s not happy to stay. “He is playing like the team. He is improving, like the team is improving, when he plays he is giving us his personality. “His desire is to play and to produce for the team and [he is] trying to adapt to the way we play and vice versa. “Can he do better? We all can do better. I can do better, he can do better, all the players can do better.” Another United

Tottenham Turn To Kane For Defining Week

Tottenham will be banking on more Harry Kane heroics at the start of a potentially season-defining week against Chelsea after their talisman fired England to a dramatic last-gasp victory at Wembley. Kane scored the winner at Tottenham’s temporary home last weekend to relegate Croatia in the Nations League and exact some revenge for England’s semi-final defeat to the same opponents at the World Cup. “He is the best goalscorer in the world… his hold-up play, as well as the goals he brings, is critical,” said England manager Gareth Southgate after England clinched a place in the Nations League Finals. “He is so hungry to lead the team even further.” But while England have built on their progress in Russia, Spurs have suffered the after-effects of a demanding summer for most of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad. Kane is one of just three Spurs players not to have picked up a muscle injury from Tottenham’s 12-strong World Cup contingent, nine of whom were involved on the final weekend of t

Lindsey PARNABY / AFP Marcus Rashford has proved with England that he has all the qualities required to be a consistent attacking threat — but his task now is to replicate that form for Manchester United. Rashford impressed as England beat Croatia 2-1 last Sunday to secure a place in next June’s Nations League Finals, yet there is no guarantee he will start when Manchester United host Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday. That is because manager Jose Mourinho is still wrestling with the question of how best to fit Rashford into his team, an issue that does not appear to be a problem at the international level. England manager Gareth Southgate, having switched f
