VAR To Be Introduced In Champions League Knock Out Phase This Season.

VAR will be used in the knock-out phase of this season’s Champions League. A number of refereeing blunders have persuaded Uefa to bring forward the introduction of the technology.
Raheem Sterling’s stubbed-toe penalty call against Shakhtar Donetsk and Spurs’ wrongly-disallowed goal at PSV Eindhoven both raised concerns.
European football chiefs had already announced VAR would come in for the Champions League next season.
But the spate of shockers has pushed through the desire to bring the change forward, starting with the last 16 round of the Champions League in February.
And it also means VAR will be used when England play in the Nations League finals stage in Portugal in June.
A final decision will be taken by Uefa’s executive committee at its meeting in Dublin at the start of December.
But Uefa President Aleksander Ceferin is keen to see VAR in use as soon as possible and the vote is expected to go through on the nod next weekend.
The decision will see the phasing out of former Uefa boss Michel Platini’s additional assistant referees standing by each goal.
VAR is still scheduled to start in the Europa League next season, but reports claim it could be introduced for this year’s final.
The technology will be used in the Premier League next season following a spate of mistakes by officials this term.
Just six months after the majority of clubs decided to delay the implementation, there was a unanimous agreement at a meeting earlier this month.
